For this project, our professor tasked us with creating a website or mobile app of our choice. I decided to create an app for the fragrance community.

FRAGMENTAL is an app for the fragheads. A fraghead is someone obsessed with all things fragrance. It is very similar to the term sneakerhead. The only difference? Fraghead doesn’t have a definition in the Urban Dictionary. The Fragrance community is smaller and made up of a generally older demographic. Although, that is changing as creatives such as Jeremy Fragrance become popular on social media sites like TikTok and YouTube. Fragmental is an application meant to bring the growing fragrance community together. Fragmental offers a new way to discover fragrances through its swipe feature and further connect fragheads with the fragrance community.

PROBLEM SPACE

It’s no lie that the younger generation has a drastic influence on the consumer market as a whole. There is a reason fragrances are not as popular as they once were. Fragrances have existed for 5,000 years and the industry hasn’t changed much at all i.e. it is traditionally marketed towards one specific gender and the product uses a number of outdated ingredients like deer musk (not vegan).

PROBLEM STATEMENT

We’ve seen companies like Sentbird attempt to spark some hype in a dying industry with its frequent social media marketing. However, the fragrance community has lost its charm with its refillable 30-day subscription services. This app aims to get people, particularly young people, excited about fragrances again and to get in touch with the already established fragrance community as they explore exactly what makes the community so unique.

In lieu of the pandemic, I opted not to do face-to-face interviews. So for my initial interviews, I chose to post a list of my interview questions to Fragrantica (the current hub of all things Fragrance), a fragrance forum site, where I had several replies within an hour.

HERE IS WHAT I GATHERED

  • Fragrantica is the only site to discuss fragrances freely

  • Fragrantica is not mobile-friendly

  • people don’t love Jeremy Fragrance

  • there is a need for an app and not just for the younger people

  • there is a lot of things I didn’t know about fragrances

I was lucky enough to facetime my friend Diana while she was teaching abroad in France, the fragrance capital of the world. Diana and her French roommates were available to look at my designs and give me feedback.

HERE IS WHAT I GATHERED

  • they absolutely loved the idea of having a tinder for fragrances

  • I should never try to pronounce French words in front of French people

  • if the app is for newbie’s they may not understand immediately what some of the fragrance terminologies is

Trevor is a Tic Tok user who stumbled across Jermey Fragrences’ Tic Tok page. He is now obsessed with everything to do with fragrances but doesn’t know how to find a fragrance he will like. He’s kind of a follower and will get anything anyone tells him. He would like to be able to make an educated decision on his own and find his signature scent.

Lauren loves all different kinds of communities. She recently just started buying and selling shoes because she found a sneakerhead forum the other day. She loves talking to new people but gets kinda embarrassed with her lack of knowledge in some topics of conversation. She just learned what ganking means in her League of Legends Discord chat the other day.
